Sorority presenting 15 young ladies at cotillion

Fifteen young ladies will compete in &uot;Miss Cotillion 2004&uot; pageant at 7 p.m. Saturday in King’s Fork Middle School.. Open to the public, this free event of elegance is being sponsored by the Suffolk Alumnae Chapter Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

The purpose of the pageant is to provide scholarship for students of higher learning.

Most of the participant are senior attending a high school in Suffolk and the surrounding area. Each will also receive a scholarship from the sorority to further his or her education.

Contestant No. 1, Valencia D. Coston is a senior at Windsor High School, and the daughter of Marilyn Coston and Ray S. Barnes. Upon graduation she plans to attend Spelman College, Clark and Old Dominion Universities where she will major in psychology. She is a member of Diamond Grove Baptist Church. Her escort is Michael A. McBride.

Contestant No. 2, Juanika S. Dildy is a senior at Lakeland High School, and is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Calvin Dildy. Upon graduation she plans to attend Virginia Commonwealth University where she will major in computer science engineering. She is a member of Palm Tree Baptist Church. Her escort is Christopher Pittman.

Contestant No. 3, Latonia C. Gardner is a senior at Nansemond River High School, and is the daughter of Tarshia L.Gardner. Upon graduation she plans to attend Norfolk State University where she will major in biology. Her escort is Andre Gerrell Haden.

Contestant No. 4, Latoya A. Gilchrist, is a senior at Lakeland High School, and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Linwood Gilchrist Sr. Upon graduation she plans to attend Old Dominion University where she will major in business and pre-law. She is a member of Faith Temple United Church of Christ. Her escort is Andre Camp.

Contestant No. 5, Tiffany J. Gillis, is a junior at Nansemond River High School, and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Willie Gillus. Upon graduation she plans to attend Norfolk State University where she will major in Forensic Science. She is a member of East End Baptist Church. Her escort is Derrand Cannon.

Contestant No. 6, Christina A. Hawkins is a senior at Nansemond River High School, and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Hawkins. Upon graduation she plans to attend Norfolk State University where she will major in nursing. She is a member of United Full Gospel Revival International Ministries Church. Her escort is Dewayne King.

Contestant No. 7, Megan Holland, is a senior at Windsor High School, and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Holland. Upon graduation she plans to attend Old Dominion University where she will major in accounting. She is a member of Chapel Grove United Church of Christ. Her escort is Brandon Cooke.

Contestant No. 8, Kendra L. Holloway, is a junior at Nansemond River High School, and is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. McKinley Holloway Jr. Upon graduation she plans to attend Old Dominion or Georgia State University where she will major in psychology, computers or architecture. She is a member of Little Bethel Baptist Church. Her escort is Terry L. Caldwell II.

Contestant No. 9, Ashley N. Hunter, is a junior at Lakeland High School, and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rolland Hunter. Upon graduation she plans to attend Norfolk State, Virginia State or North Carolina Central University where she will major in biology. Her escort is Mark Anthony Plenty Jr.

Contestant No. 10, Ashley N. Jefferson, is a junior at Lakeland High School and the daughter of Kaye Jefferson. Upon graduation she plans to attend Old Dominion University where she will major in pre-law. She is a member of East End Baptist Church. Her escort is William Author Freeman Jr.

Contestant No. 11, Tiffany S. Mason, is a junior at Nansemond River High School, and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Mason. Upon graduation she plans to attend Hampton University where she will major in sports medicine. She is a member of East End Baptist Church. Her escort is Alexander King.

Contestant No. 12, Sharel C. Middleton, is a junior at Lake Taylor High School and the daughter of Renee Garrison and Darrel Grant. Upon graduation she plans to attend Norfolk State University where she will major in Pre-Med. She is a member of Bethany Baptist Church. Her escort is Aloysuis Goston.

Contestant No. 13, Joy A. Rollins, is a junior at Lakeland High School, and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Rollins. Upon graduation she plans to attend Norfolk State University where she will major in Pre-Med. She is a member of Praise Temple Church. Her escort is Quinton Coleman.

Contestant No. 14, Tasheeka Turner, is a senior at Nansemond River High School and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ricky Brown. Upon graduation she plans to attend Old Dominion University where she will major in Pre-law or Criminal Justice. She is a member of Solomon’s Temple. Her escort is Courtney Quinttious Diggs.

Contestant No. 15, Ashley S. Williams, is a junior at Lakeland High School, and the daughter of Sherry Williams. Upon graduation she plans to attend Bethune Cookman or James Madison University where she will major in Music Industry Studies. She is a member of Macedonia African Methodist Episcopal Church. Her escort is Aston Kentrail Williams.

There are 50 members in the Suffolk Alumnae Chapter with Vicky Pickman serving as president.
