James H. Jones

James Hurley Jones, 74, of the 400 block of Whealton Road, Hampton, passed away Friday, June 18, 2004.

Born in Baltimore, Md., he was a longtime resident of the Whaleyville section of Suffolk, and was a son of the late Hurley and Mary Sue (Johnson) Jones.

A proud retiree of the United States Navy with 20 years of service, Mr. Jones was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, Cuban Missile Crisis and the Vietnam Era. He had also retired as an agent with the Home Beneficial Life Insurance Co.

A member of the Whaleyville United Methodist Church, he was a former mason with McAllister Masonic Lodge of Whaleyville and a former member of the American Legion.

He will be sadly missed by his loving wife of nearly 51 years, Mary Jane; two sons, Neal Randolph Jones, and wife, Janice, and Glenn Hurley Jones, and his wife, JoAnne, all of Newport News; one daughter, Mary Dee Diaz, and husband, Larry, of York County; three brothers, William R. Jones and Sherwood J. Jones of Chesapeake; and Douglas R. Jones of Danville. Also missing him will be his beloved grandchildren, Neysa, Christopher, Jacob, Casey, David, Robert, Jimmy, Jennifer, and Michael; and great-grandchildren, Valerie, Bridgett, Cheyanne, and Christopher Jr.; and last, but not least, Taco.

The funeral with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 23, in the Sidney F. Harrell Chapel of Harrell and Hill Funeral Home, Suffolk, by the Rev. George Griffin. Burial will follow in Whaleyville United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Friends may join the family for visitation from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.
