As the Virginia Jawbreakers softball team held its annual fundraising carwash Saturday afternoon in the parking lot of the NAPA Auto Parts store near the intersection of Godwin Boulevard and Main Street, they may not have just been scrubbing down automobiles.

Perhaps, with their soap, water, and scrub brushes, the youngsters could cleanse themselves of the bad luck that’s haunted them all season. Maybe, just maybe, they could wash away the bad memories of their thus far 2-5 record, and charge into the weekend’s Commonwealth Games in Salem squeaky clean, and full of luck.

&uot;We have to practice harder and focus on the game,&uot; said Kasie Bounds, the third base(wo)man. &uot;This raises money, and it’s fun, because we all get to hang out and have a good time. We don’t even mind getting wet, because it’s so hot out here today.&uot; The hot July sun pushed heat into the three-figure mark on several occasions Saturday.

Though their record may not show it, outfielder Melissa Bjorkland said, the squad has the ability to win more and more. &uot;It’s kind of frustrating, because we’ve been outplaying teams and losing,&uot; she said. &uot;I think we can turn it around this weekend.&uot; On Saturday and Sunday, the locals will battle teams from across the state.
