Hattie Mae Sumner, 88, of 11532 Camp Pond Rd., Suffolk, died on July 20, 2004 in Southampton Memorial Hospital in Franklin, Va.

She was pre-deceased by her husband John Henry Sumner; daughters Virgie Copeland, of Suffolk and Essie Cross of Gates County, NC; and son James L. Sumner of Suffolk. She was predeceased by two step-children, one sister, and four brothers. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Other survivors include a host of nieces, nephews and other friends and relatives; special friends Hubert Parker and Sylvia Boone of Gates Co., North Carolina; Hurley Goodman, Mary Goodman, Robert Briscoe and Dwayne Faulk all of Suffolk, Virginia.

The funeral will take place on Sunday, July 25 at 11 a.m. at Harris Funeral Home Chapel, 685 Carolina Road, Suffolk. Rev. Jerry Boone is the presiding clergy. Burial will take place at the Sumner Cemetery, Camp Pond Road, Suffolk. Harris Funeral Home Inc., 685 Carolina Road, Suffolk, is in charge of the arrangements.

Viewing will be from 10 am to 7 p.m. The family will assemble on Sunday, July 25 at 10:30 am at Harris Funeral Home, 685 Carolina Rd., for the service.
