Frances Garratt Andrews

On Saturday, July 24, Frances Garratt Andrews, at the age of 82, passed away at Parson’s Residential Care Center in Chesapeake. Frances was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Marion Garratt, a brother, Charles Garatt, and her sister, Elise Garatt. She is survived by her husband, A.M. Andrews of Suffolk; her children, James Andrews of Alexandria, Thomas Andrews of Hampton and Marion Becker of Forest; her brother, Dr. Bruce Garratt of Suffolk; and eight grandchildren.
Frances was born on Oct. 13, 1922 in Newport News, lived her childhood years in Suffolk and graduated from Suffolk high School. She attended Strayer Business College in Norfolk and worked for several years in the Tidewater area.
During the latter part of World War II, she moved to Washington, D.C. and found employment at the Civil Aeronautics Board. She met A.M. (Andy) Andrews, who was also employed at the Board. The couple wed on Oct. 26, 1946 and raised their three children in Fairfax County, where they began to reside in 1952. During this time, Frances became actively involved at Cherrydale Baptist Church in Arlington, and sponsored at Ladies Bible study in her home for over 20 years.
In 1979, Andy and Frances moved back to Suffolk, where Frances became a member of the First Baptist Church on Main Street, teaching Sunday School classes and directing church hospitality. Later she was active in the Westminster Refored Presbyterian Church at its former location on East Constance Road.
The service will take place at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 27 at the Harrell and Hill Funeral Home in Suffolk with Dr. Ruffin Alphin of Westminster Reformed Presbyterian Church of Suffolk, and Dr. Thomas C. Andrews of Harbor Pointe Community Church of Hampton officiating. After the service, the family will greet friends at the funeral home.
