Hurricane Alex should not only be causing a shift in the winds, but providing a reason to reflect and plan in the event we’re faced with another hurricane. By some accounts, Alex is merely a preface of what the hurricane season could ultimately bring to our neck of the woods.

For the past several weeks, dry weather has been a rarity, while heavy rain, flooding, lightning and thunderstorms have become the norm. In the midst of it all, however, one message should resonate: Remember Isabel.

She reared her ugly head last year and caused much destruction. This year, preparedness should be at the top of our agenda. Here are some things to keep in mind:

-Never underestimate the power of a storm;

-Keep batteries on hand for radios and/or portable televisions, and charge cell phone batteries;

-Keep gas tanks filled;

-Keep ample supplies of non-perishable foods and bottled water;

-Prepare for the event of long-term power outages with regard to shelter, clothing, food and water;

-Test generators to ensure they are operational;

-Investigate whether accommodations are in place for disabled and otherwise challenged family members, friends and neighbors;

-Plan where your pets will be in a storm;

-Make a list of all supplies you’ll need in the event of a disaster and stock up.

This partial checklist may seem cumbersome, but better safe than sorry.
