The lax days of summer are quickly coming to an end for the area’s public school students, and administrators are prepared to get the academic year off to a good start.

In doing so, back-to-school orientations for the 2004-05 school year have been scheduled as follows:

* Booker T. Washington Elementary School-Orientation for Grades K-5 will be held Thursday, Sept. 2 from 1-5 p.m.

Early Start registration will be held Monday, Aug. 30 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Early Start Open House takes place Thursday, Sept. 2 from 1-2 p.m.

* Driver Elementary School-Grades 2-5 will be held Thursday, Sept. 2 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon and 1:30-3 p.m.

* Elephant’s Fork Elementary School- Kindergarten and Grade 1, Wednesday, Sept 1 from 12 noon to 1 p.m.; Grades 2-3, Wednesday, Sept 1 from 1:15-2:15 p.m. Orientation for Grades 4-5 will be held Wednesday, Sept 1 from 2:30-3:30 p.m.

* Florence Bowser Elementary School-Kindergarten and Grade 1 will be held Thursday, Sept. 2 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.

Early Start registration will be held Monday, Aug. 30 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

* Kilby Shores Elementary School-Kindergarten will be held Wednesday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m.

Orientation for Grades 1-5 will be held Thursday, Sept. 2 from 1-5 p.m. Call the school at 925-5575.

* Mack Benn, Jr. Elementary School-Orientation for Kindergarten will be held Thursday, Sept. 2 from 3-3:30 p.m. in the cafeteria, and for Pre-School from 3-3:30 p.m. in the cafeteria; Grades 1-5 will be held Thursday, Sept. 2 from 3-6 p.m.

* Mount Zion Elementary School- Kindergarten orientation is on Thursday, Sept. 2 from 10:30-11:30 a.m.; Grades 1-5, 9 a.m. to 12 noon; Early Start orientation is from 1 to 3 p.m. Orientation for Early Childhood Special Education from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.

* Nansemond Parkway Elementary School-Orientation for Kindergarten will be held Thursday, Sept. 2 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. A meeting for Grades 1-5 is on the same day from 1-8 p.m.

Early Start registration will be held Monday, Aug. 30 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Call the school at 538-5425.

* Northern Shores Elementary School-Orientation for Kindergarten will be held Friday, Sept. 3 from 9:30-11:30 a.m.; Grades 1-5 will be held the same day from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.

* Oakland Elementary School-Orientation for Kindergarten will be held Friday, Sept. 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., with an 11 a.m. kindergarten bus ride.

Orientation for Grades 1-5 will be held Friday, Sept. 3 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.

* Robertson Elementary School-Orientation for all grades will be held Thursday, Sept 2 from 3-6 p.m.

Kindergarten orientation will be held the same day from 5-6 p.m.

* Southwestern Elementary School … Orientation for Kindergarten will held Thursday, Sept. 2 at 3:30 p.m.

Orientation for Grades 1-5 will take place on the same day from 2- 5 p.m.

* Forest Glen Middle School-A welcome picnic for 6th-graders and other new students will be held from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 26.

Orientation for all students will be held Thursday, Sept. 2 from 4-6 p.m.

* John F. Kennedy Middle School-Orientation for all students will be held Thursday, Sept. 2 from 4-6 p.m.

Gym uniforms, agendas and locks may be purchased at this time. New students will meet in the auditorium at 4 p.m., with a picnic to follow.
