Suffolk-George Vanderslice Beamon, 91, died Sunday, August 22, 2004, at Obici Hospital.

A native of Suffolk, he was the son of the late Mary Vanderslice and William Simpson Beamon, Sr.

Mr. Beamon graduated with Honors and was President of his Suffolk High School class in 1931. He was a Summa Cum Laude Engineering graduate of Virginia Tech in 1935 where he was Cadet Major his senior year. He was President of the German Club at Virginia Tech, played football and helped start the golf team. Mr. Beamon was a staunch Hokie Fan.

After graduation as a 2nd Lieutenant from Virginia Tech, Mr. Beamon actively served his country during WWII, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, and one of his posts was with the 261st Coastal Artillery. After WWII, Mr. Beamon returned to Suffolk to help run the family business Holland & Beamon, which later became Beamon’s, Inc., and later became NAPA Auto Parts, of which he was the President and owner until he retired in 1982.

His first love was his family and his second love was his passion for Golf. He was many times City Champion of the Suffolk Golf Association. He also won the Tidewater Golf Championship and the Virginia State Senior Amateur Golf Championship.

He accumulated 7 holes-in-one throughout his lifetime.

Mr. Beamon was a longtime member and Past President of the Suffolk Rotary Club, served on the Suffolk Draft Board, and the Suffolk Charitable Association. He was a lifelong member of the Suffolk Christian Church and for more than 20 years was a member of the House of Worship Committee.

In 1982 Mr. Beamon and his wife retired to Isla Del Sol, Fla. They returned to Suffolk in December 2003 to live at the Lake Prince Center.

He is survived by his wife Margaret Holzmueller Beamon; two daughters, Margaret Beamon Debranski and husband Dr. Michael John Debranski of Suffolk, and Mary Sipple Beamon Mouden and husband Dr. Lynn Douglas Mouden of Maumelle, AR; one son, George Donnan Beamon and wife Kimberly Perry Beamon of Chesapeake, VA; one sister, Alida Beamon Edwards of Stanford, CT; three granddaughters, Margaret Michael Debranski Kelhart and husband Matthew Joseph Kelhart of Alexandria, VA, Mary Donnan Debranski of Atlanta, GA, and Mary Garland Frasier of Maumelle, ARK; he is additional survived by three nieces and three nephews, as well as numerous cousins.

A memorial service will be held Thursday at 11:00 AM at the Suffolk Christian Church by the Rev. Michael D. Halley, with a reception to follow in the fellowship hall. The family will receive friends in the R. W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 PM.
