Lady Bulldogs snip away with 51-46 win

Sharde Brown and Latora King had 16 points each and Brown and Ransheda Jennings hit five decisive free throws in the last 1:21 as King’s Fork held off a late charge by host Nansemond River 51-46 on Friday evening to stay a perfect 3-0 in intra-Suffolk competition. Brown’s 11 rebounds gave her a double-double, and Jennings ended the night with 11 points. Stephanie Adams scored 13 points and Brittany Maddox 13, and Brittany Pullian pulled down 10 rebounds.
Brown, King and Ransheda helped their team race to a 22-12 lead early, but Adams and Maddox took their team on its first run of the night to get to 22-18. King and Monae Jennings ended the half with four points, and King, Ransheda and Brown started the second with six more to go up 32-18. Adams and Maddox dropped in seven of the next nine points, and the quarter ended with Fork up, 38-26.
King drained her first three-pointer of the game to start the fourth, but Stacey Smith finally cut loose for seven of the game’s next eight points, and Adams followed her up with a jumper from the top of the key to get to 43-35 with 4:15 to go. King completed a three-point play, but Maddox and Pullian neutralized it in the next two minutes.
Ransheda sank a pair of freebies, and Maddox hit a layup, then stole a pass and did another to get to 48-42 with 22 seconds to go. Brown took the inbound pass and was fouled, hitting one free throw. Maddox pushed to 49-44, but Ransheda hit two more one-pointers with six seconds left to ice the contest.
The Lady Bulldogs hope to continue their winning ways Tuesday at home against Great Bridge, while the Lady Warriors host Indian River.
