A scary stretch of road

I went to see an advertising client Wednesday. It was lunchtime and I had to take 58 west toward Holland. I got really nervous.
I used to travel that road everyday. I lived in Oak Ridge for two years and turning east onto 58 from there was always a tense moment. Invariably, large trucks speeding east would fly around the curve and not be able to stop for the light. Whenever the light would turn green, I would always count to five before pulling onto 58.
It was the same yesterday. All the commercial development along that little stretch makes for an always-crowded situation. Plus, vehicles are traveling pretty fast. I think the addition of the bypass has only added to the confusion there. That, plus a swimming pool and coy fish pond that about worked me to death were the main reasons we wanted out of there. My son is now ready for his license. I would be scared to death with a new driver in the family trying to negotiate that each day.
As I was thinking about this later Thursday evening, three people were killed in a crash between a car and pickup just over the Suffolk line in Carrsville.
I've never seen any statistics, but I would have to think this is one of the most dangerous stretches of road in the state.
I don't know what can be done. More lights, reduced speed limits, more police patrols might help, but something needs to be done. I think we're just going to see more and more accidents such as the one Wednesday as Suffolk grows.
Whatever entity has control of Suffolk roads in the future, doing something about the situation on 58 needs to top the list of priorities.
