Mary Holmes Shaffer, 92, died April 19, 2005 at Nansemond Pointe. Born May 29, 1913 in Suffolk, she was the daughter of the late Grace Truman Hanby and William Holmes Butler. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Frederick Shaffer Jr. Mrs. Shaffer was a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her sons, Lawrence F. Shaffer III and his wife, Judy of Memphis, Tenn., and Williams Holmes Shaffer and his wife, Hope of Lewisburg, Pa.; daughters, Cathy Shaffer Bennett and her husband, John of Memphis, Tenn., Anne Shaffer Keenan of Charleston, S.C.; grandsons, Lawrence F. Shaffer IV, Scott Holladay Shaffer, William H. Shaffer Jr., Robert M. Fortner; granddaughter, Betty Anne Shaffer Kresge; cousins Claudia Howell of Surry, Mary Pelham Hutton White of Virginia Beach and Lynne Scheckler of Surry and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. in Main Street Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Parks officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Main Street United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 202 N. Main Street, Suffolk, Va. 23434. Send condolences to www.rwbakerfh.com.
