Evelyn Bridges Selden Clarke, 84, died Wednesday, May 4, 2005. She was a native of Gloucester, and had lived in Smithfield for more than 60 years. She was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Smithfield Woman’s Club, Smithfield Eastern Star, Chapter 127, Colonial William Allen Chapter of the DAR, United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Young at Hearts Club in Windsor. Mrs. Clarke was a graduate of Buxton Hospital School of Nursing and a member of the Alumni Association. She retired from Louise Obici Hospital as a nursing supervisor.

Her parents, Robert Colgate and Olivia Bridges Selden, her husband, Edmund M. Clarke Sr. and a brother, Robert Selden preceded Mrs. Clarke in death.

Survivors include a son, Dr. Edmund Melson Clarke Jr.

and his wife, Martha of Pittsburg, Pa.; daughter, Nancy Clarke Verdirame and her husband, Dr. Joseph Verdirame of Suffolk; six grandchildren, Dr. James Selden Clarke and his wife, Lori of Portland, Ore., Dr. Jonathan Clarke of Atlanta, Ga., Jeffrey Clarke of Indianapolis, Ind., Dr. Michael Verdirame of New York City, Justin Verdirame of Boston, Mass., and Claudia Verdirame of Charlottesville; and two great grandchildren, Theo and Alex Clarke.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 7, 2005 in Trinity United Methodist Church, Smithfield, with the Rev. Will Montgomery officiating. The burial will follow in Ivy Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 6, 2005 in Colonial Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to American Diabetes Association, Norfolk Office, 870 Greenbrier Circle, Greenbrier Tower II, Suite 404, Chesapeake, Va. 23320, or Trinity United Methodist Church, 201 Cedar Street, Smithfield, Va. 23430.
