Charles B. Pond III of Smithfield, was awarded the 2005 North Carolina Baptist Heritage Award as Chowan College’s recipient during a presentation at the Grandover Resort & Conference Center in Greensboro, N.C., last month.

The award recognizes individuals who represent exemplary giving and service to organizations associated with the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. The special event was co-sponsored by the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina, the Council on Christian Higher Education, and the North Carolina Baptist Foundation. In addition, Pond was honored on campus during the April 7 joint meeting of the Board of Trustees and Visitors.

Chowan President Dr. Chris White noted, &uot;Charles exemplifies what a NC Heritage Award winner represents. He is a person who cares and is willing to show that he cares. He loves the Lord and he loves Chowan College.&uot;

During Pond’s recognition on April 7, he thanked Chowan College and President Dr. Chris White for their exemplary leadership. He had special thanks for Dr. Bruce Whitaker who was an inspiration to him. &uot;Because of Dr. Whitaker, I was able to go to college and develop into the person that I am today,&uot; stated Pond. He continued by stating &uot;I don’t deserve this award. I just do things because I love this school and I love the Lord.&uot;

Pond stands tall as one of the most distinguished alumni (1962) of Chowan College. With a servant’s heart, he gives tirelessly for the benefit of Chowan College, his church and community. He has given dedicated service to the Alumni Board, Board of Visitors, and Board of Trustees over the years. As a Trustee, he currently serves on the Executive Committee and is the Vice Chair of the Business Affairs Committee. He has received the most coveted award given to an alumnus, The Distinguished Alumni Award.

Pond is also a founding member of the Chowan College Christian Service Association and serves of the Special Gifts Committee.

Pond has distinguished himself academically over the years, earning the Master of Divinity degree from Baptist Theological Seminary in Richmond, , where he also serves as a Trustee. Through business ownerships that include Nansemond Cold Storage, Inc. in Suffolk, VA and Taylor Freezers, Inc. in Chesapeake, he has shared his blessings freely for the benefit of Chowan College, Baptist Theological Seminary in Richmond, and the Boy Scouts of America.

Pond and his wife, Juanita, are members of Central Hill Baptist Church, Windsor. He is an active member of the Blackwater Baptist Association of Virginia. He is currently serving as representative to The Religious Herald. A native and longtime resident of Suffolk, he was reared in West End Baptist Church where he served in a number of capacities. He has also been recognized by the Old Dominion Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
