Harris to address Tidewater grocers

Winder R. Harris, vice-president of the Shipbuilders Council of America, will be the feature speaker Saturday at the spring meeting of the Tidewater Wholesale Dealers’ Association, at Planters Club program chairman W. Quentin Brothers said today.

Harris will be presented by Judge Floyd E. Reliam, of the 18 Judicial Circuit of Virginia. Brothers stated that the club and grounds will be open on Saturday afternoon with a reception to be held at 5:30 p.m.

Paul C. Stokley, president of the association, will preside over the dinner session at 6:30 p.m. Judge James L. McLemore will give the invocation.

Tadlock winner in contest

Mrs. E. P. Tadlock was the winner in the Better Dress Contest held at the meeting of the Bethlehem Home Demonstration Club Monday afternoon at Mrs. Clifford Austin’s home.

Mrs. Tadlock’s was a home made dress. Mrs. H. G. Harrell won second prize for her bought dress. Other entrants in the fashion parade included Mrs. Sarah Mizelle, Mrs. Arthur Wilkins, Mrs. S. E. Barnes and Mrs. D. J. Griggs.

Mrs. Austin conducted the devotional service and Mrs. Tadlock presided. Plans were made for a lawn party to be held in June.

Mrs. Austin gave an interesting demonstration on freezing cooked foods. She showed how to prepare them for greasing, the types of wrappings.

At the conclusion of the program the hostess, assisted by Mrs. Edward Johnson, served refreshments.

There were 11 members and four visitors present.

Holladay installed as PTA President

Mrs. John Holladay Jr., was installed as president of the George Mason Parent-Teachers Association at their meeting yesterday afternoon at the school.

Mrs. S. B. Carter had charge of the installation service. Other officers seated were Vice-president Mrs. William Beamon; secretary, Mrs. Mary Elliott; treasurer, Miss Jane Shaw; historian, Miss Roxie Dunning.

Before the installation Mrs. Seth Benton presided over the business session. Yearly reports were given by the following committee chairmen; membership, Mrs. Hank Bernstein; summer round-up, Mrs. O. L. Hayes; building and grounds, Mrs. Paul Everett; nursery department, Mrs. W. T. Harry; budget and finance, Mrs. W. E. Parker; health, Mrs. Dorothy Kitchen; publications, Miss Mary Elliott; publicity, Mrs. E. H. Stephenson.

Mrs. S. B. Carter told the gathering that the George Mason PTA was the first in the city of Suffolk to join the state PTA.

Suffolk team faces Emporia

After two days of highly satisfactory road competition, in which they stretched their winning streak to nine straight games, our Suffolk Goobers perform at home tonight against Smut Aderholt’s Emporia Senator’s.

The game in Peanut Park tonight will be observed as Ladies night at 8 p.m.

Bill Steinecke’s boys captured their ninth in a row and their 11th in the past 12 games last night with a 10-6 triumph over Emporia in the Little Nats’ home park otherwise known as &uot;Home Run Heaven.&uot;

The Goobers pounded two Emporia pitchers for 16 hits, only one of which went for an extra base. Emporia got seven hits off three Suffolk hurlers, but scored heavily on errors and bases on bails.

Dick Elliott, Cecil Hutson and Ed White pitched in that order for the Goobers, with Hutson getting credit for the victory-his fourth of the season against two defeats.

Jack Wilkes bats in 6 runs

That one-day layoff that Jack Wilkes, Suffolk third baseman, took Monday must have done him a world of good.

Wilkes was injured Sunday afternoon when he crashed into the clubhouse making a circus catch of a foul fly. He finished out that game, but was forced to lay out the following day because of sore shoulder muscles.

Last night’s triumph was the returned to the lineup and was a powerful force in the Goober’s 17-7 rout of the Robins. Wilkes’ four blows were only a part of Suffolk’s 18-hit attack on four Lawrenceville pitchers. Floyd Clift, hitting the ball at a terrific pace this season, also got four for five, but drove in only one run.
