Nansemond-Suffolk Academy and visiting St. Christopher’s (SC) made a valiant effort to play their first-round state tournament baseball game despite a steady downpour Tuesday afternoon. The two schools made it through four and a half innings and were tied at 2-2 before the field became unplayable and the remainder of the game was postponed.

The game will resume with NSA coming to bat in the bottom of the fifth.

NSA got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the first. Matt Hamlet scored from second when a Jason Rock grounder to short was thrown past the first baseman for an error.

Two batters later, Rock scored from third on a wild pitch.

With Adam Keeling on the mound, SC did not manage a hit until there were two outs in the third inning. But a solo home run in the fourth and another single tally in the fifth tied the game before the rain became too much to play through. The game will resume today.

Both of Nansemond River’s Southeastern district tournament games were also postponed, to be made up this evening. The Lady Warriors will battle Great Bridge at Oscar Smith at 5 p.m., and the baseball team will host Deep Creek at 7:30 p.m.
