Fish and chicken dinners at Gates of Heaven

Gates of Heaven COGIC, 112 Beech St., will be selling fish and chicken dinners at 11 a.m. today. The dinners include string beans, potato salad and rolls and dessert. It will take place in the parking lot at Gates of Heaven. The cost is $5 per plate. Call 934-0324 for more information.

Sunday School Union at Pleasant Union

Pleasant Union Baptist Church, 215 Webb St., Suffolk will host the 118th year of the Nansemond-Isle of Wight Sunday School Union today and Sunday. The session begins at 10 a.m. today with youth choir rehearsal and registration of the 35 schools at 10:30 a.m.

The general session begins at 11 a.m. The workshop theme is &uot;No Faith, No Future,&uot; Proverbs 3:3-6.

Workshop presenters are as follows: the Rev. Charles Leavell, Balm of Gilead, pastor and adult presenter; Deacon Evrett Cannon, Trinity Baptist Church, a soldier who served in Iraq, youth presenter, and Mary Williams, Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, teacher and children’s presenter.

Wendy Bullock will recognize the 2005 graduates of the Nansemond-Isle of Wight Sunday School Union who completed and excelled in their academic goals. Lunch will follow.

During the Saturday afternoon session, there will be an update of the Union’s progress by Field Worker, Ernestine Langston and missionary reports. On Sunday, Sunday School begins at 9:30 a.m. with Superintendent Ernestine Shepard. The morning worship service will be conducted by the Rev. Dr. Vaurice Chambers, pastor. After dinner, the youth will make their presentation and committee reports will conclude the session. Willie F. Gary is the president.

Hurdle Brothers at New Calvary

New Calvary Baptist Church, 220 N. Sixth St., will have the Hurdle Brothers of Portsmouth in concert at 4 p.m. Sunday. Also at 11 a.m. June 5, will observe Women’s Day with special guest speaker Patricia Norman.
