Students at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy are afforded an opportunity to develop an appreciation of choral music in all of its forms and styles.

This is the premise behind the elementary chorus, comprised of third, fourth and fifth grade students, traveling to area retirement homes to share their graceful melodies and the essence of the human spirit.

NSA’s Young Chorus shared song and emotion as they embarked on a field trip traveling to Suffolk’s Autumn Care, Lake Prince Woods, Nansemond-Pointe Rehabilitation Center and Tandem Health Care of Windsor last week.

The students, led by music teacher, Katie West, hoped to foster and promote the appreciation of choral music in the community.

West also strives to encourage her students to nurture their own artistic expression and promote achievement in music, school and life.

&uot;It’s a positive experience for both the residents and the students,&uot; said West. &uot;One couldn’t help but be touched by the earnestness of these young faces as they sang so beautifully.&uot;

Participants of the NSA Chorus Field Trip are as follows:

-Third grade- Erin Atienza, Laura Fisher, Charlotte Maurno, Savannah Sims

-Fourth grade- Matt Brummett, Christine Comer, Kayla Eanes, Quinby Hines, Danielle Jennette, Jennifer Johnson, Alex Mathews, Katie Porter, Amelia Rowland, LeeAnn Wilburn and Rachel Waller

-Fifth grade- Alexis Baldwin, Brittany Bass, Kela Bogaard, Kristin Goodwin, Corin Shepheard.
