Last Wednesday, the Suffolk City Council got its first look at a proposed ordinance for the city to receive a $75,463 Homeland Security Grant through the Virginia Department of Emergency Management.

City lawmakers are slated to approve it later this month. The grant includes:

-$25,463 for the Suffolk Fire Department, which will be used for technical rescue and confined space training.

-$25,000 for the Suffolk Police Department, which will be used to buy and install mobile display terminals and in-car computers.

-$25,000 for the Suffolk Department of Public Works, which is earmarked for buying and installing video assessment cameras to enhance the security at the Suffolk Municipal Building.

In recent years, the money has been used to install security cameras at the Robert House Water Treatment Plant in Chuckatuck and Suffolk Executive Airport, said Capt. Jim Judkins, the city’s emergency services coordinator.
