Joyce B. Harris

Joyce B. Harris 51, of 407 Webb St., Suffolk, went home to be with the Lord Jesus on June 5, 2005.

The angels carried her from Chowan Hospital to eternal rest.

Joyce was a native of Suffolk.

She was the daughter of Lizzie B. Goodman and the late Willie Thomas Baker Jr. and the late Elder Linwood Goodman

Sr.

She was also the wife of the late Ernest Earl Harris Sr.

Joyce was a graduate of John F. Kennedy High School, Suffolk and worked as a cook for 22 years at the Dining Room Restaurant in Suffolk.

She was a member of the New Jerusalem Holiness Church, Carrsville, where she served as the pastor’s aid president, Senior Choir Member and a Sunday School Teacher.

In the Suffolk District, under the leadership of Dr. James J. Johnson, she served as the pastor’s aid president.

Joyce was a great fundraiser and a true servant working for the Lord.

Survivors include two daughters, Shenetta F. Hamlin (Alton) and Sonia D. Matthews, both of Suffolk; mother, Lizzie B. Goodman; five sisters, Mary B. Warren (Elder Robert) of Suffolk, Evangelist Dollie B. Ricks (Bishop Clarence) of Hampton, Anita L. Baker, Evangelist Trina B. Artis (Elder Darryl), Mildred B. Knight (Rev. Lewis) all of Suffolk and Ethel G. Horton of Maryland; one brother, Willie D. Baker (Sandra) of Suffolk; three stepbrothers, Elder Cleophus Goodman (Linda) of Waterbury Conn., Otis Goodman (Gloria) and Linwood Goodman, Jr. (Louise) both of Maryland; one stepbrother-in-law, Arthur Jones of New York, mother-in-law, Lucille Lyttle and one brother-in-law, Larry Harris both of Suffolk; one grandson, Benevante’ Stephenson; three step-grandsons, Markese Wilson, Tierro Williams and Alvin White; two grandmothers, Dollie J. Wright and Esther B. Baker; four godchildren, Amanda Outlaw Downs, Jessica Harrell, Denita Baker and Desiree’ Parrish; several devoted friends, Jean Knight, Minister Rose Blizzard, Gloria Pelham and others; a host of uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

A funeral service will be held at noon Saturday, June 11, 2005 at New Mt Joy Food for Living Ministry, 307 County St., Suffolk. A viewing will be held from 1 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 10, 2005. Friends may visit at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Alton Hamlin Jr., 3260 Nansemond Parkway in Suffolk. The interment will be in Holly Lawn Cemetery.
