Fred Quayle is elected head of Junior Chamber

Fred Quayle was elected president of the Suffolk-Nansemond Junior Chamber of Commerce, succeeding Bobby Floyd, at a business meeting of the group on Wednesday night.

Other officers elected were William Carr, state director; Merritt C. Draper, first vice president; Benjamin Plewes, recording secretary; Buddy Tolleson, corresponding secretary; and William McKinney, treasurer.

Directors elected during the meeting were Linwood Callis, Fred Whitfield, Walter Ward, Bob Funkhouser, Bill Birdsong and Lloyd O. Hines.

Blair heads student senate

Robert Blair, a rising senior at Suffolk High School will be president of the Student Senate next year.

After three days of electioneering at the school, he was voted to the top student government post, and Donnie Goldberg, a rising junior, was elected vice president.

Both are Key Club members, and Goldberg was recently installed as the club’s secretary.

Blair this year is vice president of the Student Senate, and Goldberg is president of the sophomore class.

Retiring principal honored by PTA

Mrs. Dorothy B. Kitchin, principal of George Mason School who will retire in June, was presented a silver bowl by the Parent-Teacher Association of the school at a meeting Wednesday afternoon in the social hall.

Mrs. Kitchin has been an educator for the past 38 years and has taught 31 years in the Suffolk School system. She has taught both at George Mason and John Randolph schools and became principal of Mason school in 1946.

She will be succeeded by Mrs. Mary Elliott, first grade teacher at the school.

N&W considers moving communications

Although a definite decision has not been reached by the Norfolk and Western Railroad to remove their Liberty Street communications towers, a railroad official indicated today that the matter is being considered.

The tower here is located at a point where the Norfolk, Franklin and Danville and old Virginia divisions of the N & W will converge on the main N&W line.

Women here form Insurance Chapter

A new organization, the Suffolk Association of Insurance Women, was formed in Suffolk Wednesday.

The organization is sponsored by the Suffolk Association of Insurance Agents and all members are associated with the Independent Insurance Agents of Suffolk and Nansemond County and their adjusters.
