G. C. Mann to retire as Cypress Principal

&uot;The Dean of Nansemond County educators,&uot; G. C. Mann, retires as principal of Cypress School at the end of the school year.

His retirement and the appointment of Mrs. Dora Horton as head of the faculty at Cypress were announced Thursday by Supt. H. S. Abernathy.

The action was taken in an executive session of the Nansemond County School Board following the regular meeting Tuesday.

Mann has been principal at Cypress School for almost 40 years. Mrs. Horton, now a seventh grade teacher, has been on the school’s faculty for 19 years.

Buster Hawkins wins scholarship

Suffolk High School athlete Buster Hawkins knew last March he’d made a big impression with Eastern District coaches in the Group I basketball tournament, and he didn’t find out until Thursday how big.

It was announced that he will be the recipient of the $400 Eastern District coaches’ scholarship for 1963.

The three-sport athlete gained renowned in Tidewater and throughout the state when, as guard for the SHS basketball team, he held Eastern District scoring champion Harvey Roberts of Granby pointless in the quarterfinal round.

Announcement of the grant, the first to be awarded to a Suffolk student, was made by Harry Blevins of Great Bridge, chairman of the coaches’ scholarship committee.

Raider netters seek Fifth Straight crown

Suffolk High School’s tennis team left here early this morning for Charlottesville in quest of a fifth straight State Group I championship.

The Raider team traveled in two cars-one leaving around 9 o’clock and the other, carrying players who also are band members, leaving around 10. The band held an early-morning rehearsal for its Sunday concert.

Players making the trip were Tommy Morgan, Bobby Morgan, Robert Blair, Sandy Tucker, Conan Daniels, Judd Barett, Baker Parker and Dickie Baines.

Representing the other three Virginia High school districts at the tournament are Thomas Jefferson of Richmond, Wakefield of Arlington, and Patrick Henry of Roanoke.

King’s Fork PTA elects Brown

Thaxton M. Brown has been installed as president of the King’s Fork Parent-Teacher Association for 1963-64, succeeding Mrs. Robert Alwood.

Other officers installed by the Rev. Peyton Royal, pastor of Western Branch Baptist Church, were as follows: vice president, William Grosh; secretary, Mrs. J. W. Boothe; assistant secretary, Mrs. J. B. Anderson; treasurer, T. A. Duff.
