A 7-year-old injured when his bicycle collided with a pickup truck Thursday night is in serious condition in the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters.

&uot;Jatarus Talley’s injuries are non-life threatening,&uot; said George Stinnett, the hospital’s spokesman, on Friday. &uot;I’ve spoken with his family and they seem pretty calm this morning.&uot;

Talley, who lives in the 600 block of Battery Avenue, was traveling north on his bike around 6:20 p.m. when it struck the side of a westbound 1994 Mazda driven by William Johnson of the 400 block of Jackson Street, said Lt. Debbie George, spokeswoman for the Suffolk Police Department.

The impact knocked Talley, who was not wearing a helmet, onto the roadway, George said.

Johnson, who is related to Talley, said he was driving his son to softball practice when the youngster darted out in front of him.

Neither speed nor alcohol factored into the accident, said George.

But Officer David Rupe’s investigation showed that Johnson’s driving status was suspended at the time of the accident.

Dozens of neighbors and friends gathered along Battery Avenue after Talley’s accident, hoping to hear words about the youngster’s condition.

operator’s license, which is a second offense, are pending, George said.

Driving on a suspended operator’s license-second offense is a class one misdemeanor, punishable by up to a year in jail and a $2,500 fine.
