Some of the races in Tuesday’s Commonwealth of America primary election were closer than others. But had more voters come out to cast their ballots, said electoral board chairman David Sylvia, they might have been even closer.

&uot;They’re abysmal,&uot; Sylvia said of the voting numbers. &uot;We don’t have the exact percentages, but it’s even lower than we anticipated. It’s just a rough estimate, but looking down the line, it looks like an average of between 70 and 75 voters per precinct.&uot;

Former attorney general Jerry Kilgore easily won the Republican nomination for governor, garnering over 80 percent of the vote in his defeat of G.B. Fitch as of press time.

Kilgore was holding a 663-127

lead in Suffolk, with 71 of his votes coming from Ebenezer.

William T. &uot;Bill&uot; Bolling was far ahead of Sean Connaughton in the race for the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor, garnering a 502-282

lead in Suffolk. Robert F. &uot;Bob&uot; McDonnell was far ahead of Stephen Baril, hauling an early 583-202 lead.

The race for the Democratic lieutenant governor’s race was much closer, as Chap Peterson edged ahead of Viola Baskerville and Leslie Byrne 207-175-170.
