Suffolk’s own Amazin’ Mets

One run and three outs.

That was as close as the Suffolk Youth Athletic Association Bronco league’s Mets were to losing in the league tournament title game last Friday.

Though they’d beaten the Brewers in the first round of the tournament (the team had tied for first in the regular season), the miniature Milwaukee squad had roared back to beat the Mets 6-0 in the double-elimination tournament two days before. A seven-run third inning had snared the Brewers a 9-0 lead in the fourth in the last game, and if a team grabs a 10-0 lead after the fifth, the game ends on a mercy rule.

But before those last few outs could slip away, the small &uot;New Yorkers&uot; got down to business.

David Waterfield led off the bottom of the fourth with a triple to center, and J.T. Wilson cashed him in with a single. Nathan Moore smacked a two-bagger to center to knock in J.T., and scored himself for the third run. Garrison Coates then singled, stole second and scored on an error to get within five runs as the inning ended.

J.T. set the Brewers down, and J.J. Grant went to work on offense, singling to left. David singled, and J.T. knocked them both in with a one-shot of his own. Nathan again brought J.T. home, and Ryan Jackson got Nathan in with a single. Garrison knocked Ryan home, and the improbable had come true – in the span of two innings, the Mets had charged back from a 9-0 deficit against the team that had tied them for the league’s top honor.

But they weren’t quite done. Terry Rosenboro bounced a ground-rule double over the fence in the sixth, and David drove him home to get on the high side of the score. J.T. again kept the Brewers offense quiet, and the Mets had their title.
