The driver of a dump truck struck by a freight train early Tuesday is recovering in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital today.

Andre A. Daniel, 42, of Virginia Beach, is listed in fair condition, said Lt. Debbie George, spokeswoman for the Suffolk Police Department.

The 1999 International truck was entering Vulcan Materials Co. at 1273 Portsmouth Blvd., near the intersection of East Washington Street, around 7 a.m. when it collided with the eastbound CSX train, said George.

The truck failed to yield at the rail crossing on the private road leading into the company’s office, she said.

The collision split the dump truck into two pieces, George said.

The train dragged the cab approximately 44 yards, she said. Meanwhile, the body of the truck came to rest 354 yards from the accident scene.

The railroad crossing was marked with signs, George said.

Charges are pending against the truck driver, George said.
