A grand jury on Wednesday handed down multiple indictments against a man who orchestrated a 12-hour standoff with police in July 2003.

Abdul Jamal Skinner, 28, of 1012 E. Washington St. was indicted on six counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony; three counts of rape; two counts each of abduction and abduction with intent to defile; and one count each of aggravated malicious wounding, shooting/stabbing/wo-unding, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, sodomy, possession of a sawed-off shotgun and discharging a firearm inside an occupied building.

Skinner, who has been at Western Tidewater Regional Jail since his arrest, will be arraigned in Suffolk Circuit Court on Friday, said Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Marie Walls, who is prosecuting the case.

According to records, Skinner went into his former girlfriend’s house on Jackson Street, taking the woman and his child hostage, on July 21, 2003. Although the pair slipped out of the house safely, the standoff between Skinner and police lasted until noon the following day, according to police records.

Hostage negotiators spent hours unsuccessfully trying to flush Skinner out of the house, according to police reports. He finally emerged after police tossed several canisters of tear gas into the house.
