Plumbers and Vepco win games

The undefeated Plumbers won their sixth-straight game here last night in the city softball league by shutting out Pender 8-0 behind the two-hit pitching of Douglas Sanford after the Vepco team had defeated the Bankers-Commerce team 10-4 in the opener with a seven run rally in the fourth frame. Both games were fast and well-played, with the season’s largest crowd turning out to see them.

The title-bound &uot;pipe fixers&uot; collected eight hits off the pitching of Bill Morgan and made each one count for runs. Manager Arthur Owns led the Plumbers at the plate with three hits in as many times up. Edward Hazlette and Dan Boyce collected two hits each with one of Boyce’s being a home run in the fifth inning with two men on base.

Wellons Park Recreational Center softball teams made a clean sweep of the three games played yesterday afternoon with their rivals, Joyner Park. The juniors won a double-header from the Eastenders by the scores of 9-2 and 10-1, behind the four-hit pitching of David Darden and the two-hit twirling of Dewey Howell. In the nightcap game, the Wellons girls defeated the Joyner girls by the score of 5-1 in their opening game of the season.

Interest shown in new ironer

Suffolk housewives were crowding the salesroom of R. R. Allen and Son today to witness the demonstration of Miss Ruth Gardner with the Easy home ironer.

The ironing, accomplished while the ironer sits and merely guides the garments as they pass the hot plate on a cylinder, held the interest of those who have been doing their own home laundry and ironing in the old manner.

To prove the task is simple, Miss Gardner had her visitors sit in a use the new machine without previous practice. The demonstrations will continue through noon tomorrow.

Hutton Parker to be at Parley

John K. Hutton and John C. Parker of Franklin were named delegates to attend a conference of Virginia attorneys in Lynchburg, June 30, when a committee of justices of the state Supreme Court of Appeals will meet with them to draft rules and regulations to apply to the practice of law under the state’s new bar integration act. The meeting was attended by members of the Suffolk Bar Associations and

held in the Chamber of Commerce building last night.

The meeting was called by Judge James L. McElmore, presiding judge of this judicial circuit, at the request of members of the Supreme Court of Appeals of Virginia G. A. Harris, president of the Suffolk Association was elected chairman of the meeting.
