To celebrate its grand opening, the Suffolk Department of Parks and Recreation and the CAN-I Disc Golf Club will hold a ribbon cutting today at 10 a.m. for the new disc golf course at Bennett’s Creek Park.

A tournament will follow the ribbon cutting.

The state of the art course was designed and built by a joint partnership between Suffolk Parks and Recreation and the CAN-I Disc Golf Club and meets all current Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) standards. The course measures 4,440 feet using the Recreation Tees, 5,441 feet from the Advanced Tees, and 6,554 feet from the Professional Tees. The course is free and open to the public.

Cow Pie Bingo today

The Suffolk chapter of the American Red Cross will host Suffolk’s first Cow Pie Bingo event at 3 p.m. today at the Suffolk Executive Airport.

The cow determines the winner by making a &uot;deposit&uot; on one of the squares. Chances on each square are sold for $10. Only 100 tickets will be sold. The winner will receive a gift basket of local certificates and items valued at over $600. Attendance is not mandatory to win. Summer Reading and Math program

The Zeta Epsilon Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. is sponsoring its 24th Summer Reading and Math Enrichment Program. The program will be held on weekdays at Booker T. Washington Elementary School through June 30 from 9 a.m. to noon. This program is open to youth that are currently enrolled in grades K-5.

The overall objective of the program is to provide opportunities for students to engage in reading and math activities for enjoyment, enlightenment and enrichment.

Program activities will include comprehension skills, vocabulary skills, recreational reading, creative expressions (oral and written) storytelling, art expression, educational games, computation, and problem solving. SPOR-AC holding signups

The Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring the SPOR-AC Summer Leadership Program from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Thursday July 11 to Aug. 4 at Nansemond River High. The program offers a variety of team-building activities, computers, educational seminars and field trips. Parents must have completed registration form, proof of child’s age and a $20 fee. Storytime at the Station

Through Aug. 11, the Suffolk Seaboard Station, Railroad Museum, is presenting Storytime at the Station. Children ages 3-8 can participate. Join Whiskers and friends every Thursday. Hero Hoe Down

Tired of traffic, crowded malls and hurried days? Join the Suffolk chapter of the American Red Cross from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Suffolk Executive Airport for our first annual Hero Hoe Down. The menu will include barbecue, cole slaw, baked beans, roll and soda.

Entertainment will be provided by local musician Jason Swain, the Peanut City Cloggers and KlownTown Entertainment. Tickets to the event are $15 for adults and $10 for children and includes meal and all entertainment and activities.
