The Suffolk man charged with the April 1 slaying of Terrence K. Britt will be tried for capital murder.

Suffolk General District Court Judge James A. Moore on Tuesday certified capital murder, felony habitual offender and robbery charges against Korey L. Jacobs, 33, of the 500 block of Battery Avenue.

During Jacobs’ preliminary hearing, Moore reduced a breaking and entering charge to unarmed burglary.

Moore also found Jacobs guilty of obstructing justice and defective equipment. Jacobs could be sentenced to death if found guilty of capital murder.

Jacobs confessed to the murder on April 3, while being questioned by Suffolk Police Detective Gary Myrick.

Jacobs told police that he confronted Britt April 1 and accused him of telling a friend that Jacobs was bisexual.

He told police that he hit Britt six or eight times with a wooden stick, then stabbed him three times in the back with a knife he found in Britt’s Liberty Avenue apartment, Myrick said.

Jacobs said he had been

smoking crack cocaine the night of the incident, Myrick said.

Jacobs was initially arrested after police a uniformed patrol officer stopped him for an equipment violation on North Main Street.

When police attempted to pull him over, he fled across the Suffolk Shopping Center on foot and soon disappeared into a nearby wooded area, said Officer J.B. Gaydos.
