Woodward selling business interests

Mayor Richard L. Woodward Jr., whose resignation from public office takes affect a week from tonight, today confirmed a rumor that he is giving up the farm equipment firm he established here 20 years ago in order to retire from the business world as well.

Mayor Woodward told a News-Herald reporter that transactions in which he is selling the Woodward Farm Equipment Company, which has its offices at 158 South Main Street, to Fermer Perry, Nansemond County farmer and lumberman, should be fully consummated early next week.

Need for sincere religion stressed by Reverend Alley

Rev. George D. Alley, pastor of Suffolk Christian Church, says there is a crying need in this nation for more sincere and active religious affiliation.

While more people are now affiliated with organized religious institutions than ever before in our history; Rev. Alley told the American Legion Auxiliary Post 57, half the country’s citizenry has no religious affiliation and of those who do, only one third are active.

The clergyman addressed the group’s final meeting of the season at the post home Tuesday night.

Mrs. Milton Johnson WTCU July hostess

The WCTU met yesterday at 3 p.m. in the West Bible classroom of the Oxford Methodist Church with Mrs. C. C. Rawles, president of the group presiding.

Devotionals or the subject of Obedience were conducted by Mrs. J. W. Mizelle, Mrs. Rawles read articles from the &uot;Union Signal and the Christian Sun&uot; and also letters from Miss Elizabeth A. Smart, director of legislation in Washington, D.C.

Excerpts from the state executive meeting and institution held recently in Waynesboro were given by Mrs. J. S. Davis.

Officers and committees set by Women of the Moose

Margaret Whitley was installed as senior regent of the Women of the Moose Monday evening, at the Installation Ceremonies held at the Moose Home on the Smithfield Road.

Other officers installed were: Dorothy C. Brinkley, junior graduate regent, Verneda Griggs, junior regent; Earline Evans, chaplain; Josephine Jory, recorder; Betty R. Cole, treasurer; Mildred Salmon, guide; Mildred McCarthy, assistant guide; Blanch Norfleet, sentinel; Mildred Eure, angus; Inez Wise, pianist.
