The Suffolk City Council will gather in a closed meeting this week to evaluate the performance of the city’s four council-appointed employees.

Lawmakers will review the work of City Manager R. Steven Herbert, City Assessor Maria Kattmann, City Attorney Edward Roettger and City Clerk Erika Jenkins during their executive session at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

That meeting will be followed by the council’s work session at 4 p.m. and its regular meeting at 7 p.m.

Last year, Herbert received a 10 percent raise that upped his annual salary to $130,000.

That action was based on both his performance, particularly in responding to the September 2003 Hurricane Isabel disaster, and the council’s desire to bring Suffolk’s administrative pay scale more in line with neighboring communities, said Mayor Bobby L. Ralph, during an interview in August 2004.

Kattmann received a 5 percent raise while Roettger and Jenkins each got 4 percent raises last year.

Earlier this year, the council approved 4 percent average pay raises for most city employees.

The only exception is for public safety workers, who are receiving more as a result of a recently completed compensation study.
