Curlie Mae Sumner

Curlie Mae Sumner was directly summoned from earth to eternal rest Wednesday, July 6, 2005.

Curlie was a native of Suffolk and was the daughter of the late Edward and Florence Darden. She attended Rosenwald Elementary School, Nansemond Institute and the Candis E. Darden Cosmetology School. She retired as a beautician at Curlie’s Beauty Salon.

She joined Canaan Baptist Church at an early age where she served faithfully until her health failed on the usher’s ministry, pastor’s aid, missionary ministry, Sunday School and New Ideal Working Club. She was also a Watch Care member of Corinth Chapel Christian Church of Holland in Suffolk.

She was the widow of the late Fenton Sumner. She was predeceased by four brothers, William (Alfred), William (Buddy), James (Jabo) and Raymond, and five sisters, Martha, Rosa, Candis, Leora and Florence.

She leaves to mourn one daughter, Gloria Ann Boone of Chesapeake; 12 grandchildren, one great grandchild, one brother, Walter L. Darden Sr. of Suffolk, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, July 11, 2005 in Canaan Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Robert L. Barnes II will officiate. The Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family will be at 202 Spoon Court, Suffolk. The body will be taken to the church at noon Monday. Crocker Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
