AARP: And the survey says….

On Wednesday, AARP released survey results measuring their members’ feelings on senior-related issues and how candidates’ stands on those issues might impact seniors’ voting decisions in upcoming elections.

Long-term care, transportation, payday loans, and state taxes were the topic areas surveyed.

Among the more notable results; confidence in the ability to pay for long-term care is low, with only 20 percent of respondents saying they are very confident they could pay one year worth of long-term care costs.

Three of four people said that the Commonwealth should do more to ensure the quality and availability of long-term care choices.

Three-quarters of members are satisfied with how they get around in their community, but seventy percent of respondents think increased funding for public transportation is extremely or very important.

Six of 10 members said that they would be more likely to vote for a candidate who supports protecting payday loan consumers.

Raising cigarette, alcohol, and corporate taxes were favorable to seven of ten polled; and 64 percent supported raising income taxes on those with an income over $100,000 a year.

Increasing state sales taxes had only 38 percent support.

&uot; The findings of this research will be shared with our members, the media, the general public, all candidates and those concerned about making Virginia a place where all its citizens can age with dignity and respect,&uot; AARP Virginia State Director Bill Kallio said about releasing the survey.
