8 Union men draw long jail sentences

Henderson, N.C. – Eight members of the Textile Workers Union drew long prison sentences Thursday after their conviction for conspiring to dynamite a cotton mill.

The eight included Boyd Payton, 51, Carolina’s director of the union who led the long and often violent strike at the Harriet-Henderson cotton mills here.

Superior Court Judge Raymond Mallard sentenced Peyton to six to 10 years of hard labor.

Boy scouts spend week at camp

Boy Scouts attending camp at Camp Waters this week are Billy Keeling, Terry Bagnell, Pat Mason, Kenny Carson, Denny Preston, Aubrey Beale, Wesley Stilley, Richard Davis, Billy Carey, Ronnie Monroe, Mark Bailey, Skippy McClanahan, Jimmy Lawrence, Randy Hingerty, Roger King and Bryant Diggs.

Early won’t run for sheriff post

Ray H. Early Sr. will not run for sheriff of Nansemond County in the November 3 election.

&uot;Now would be the wrong time to run,&uot; he said this morning. &uot;But I want to thank those who have offered me their support.&uot;

Early’s decision not to run leaves two in the race. James C. &uot;Jimmie&uot; Knight, having won the July 14 Democratic primary, is the Democratic Party’s nominee.

Carlton J. Wilkins filed qualifying papers Tuesday and announced his candidacy for the office.

Mrs. Ethel Jackson attends florist meet

Mrs. Ethel Jackson, proprietor of Ethel’s Floral Shop, attended the International Florist Association’s 7th Annual Convention which convened at Hampton Institute July 12-15.

Mrs. Jackson states that the designing and judging session held on July 14 was particularly interesting.

Mrs. Rawls victor in second flight

Suffolk’s Mary Helen Rawls failed to get into the championship flight in the women’s state golf tournament at Richmond last week but did win top honors in her flight – the second.

Mrs. Rawls defeated Lillian Lea of Fairfax, 2 and 1, in the second flight finals.
