Nansemond-Suffolk Academy student campers were delighted to hear surprising news that former NASA Astronaut Kenneth D. Cameron was to make a special guest appearance at the Virginia Air & Space Museum during their Field Trip last Wednesday.

Cameron became an astronaut in l985 and has completed three spaceflights.

Prior to his career at NASA, Cameron served in the United States Marine Corps as an infantry platoon commander in the Republic of Vietnam.

He was also assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Saigon as a Marine security guard.

He received his naval aviator wings in l973 and has logged more than 4,000 hours flying time in 48 different types of aircrafts.

&uot;He was awesome,&uot; said NSA teacher and summer camp counselor, Anne Fowler.

&uot;He told us about his personal experiences with each space launch and made it so real for the children. They all enjoyed it so much.

In fact, he inspired a lot of children to want to become astronauts themselves.&uot;

Student campers were intrigued and asked Cameron numerous questions about sleeping, and personal hygiene while in space.

The afternoon was concluded with video footage, interactive workshops and a three Dimensional Space Station Movie in the IMAX Theatre.

&uot;He was truly dynamic,&uot; said Ann Lovell, NSA summer camp director. &uot;It was an action-packed day!&uot;
