Over the last six months, there have been several articles about the problems and now solutions regarding Suffolk Shelter for the Homeless.

Most recently, the board of directors for the agency wrote a letter of commitment which was printed in the Suffolk News Herald.

They pledged to continue their support to operate Western Tidewater's only homeless shelter.

In addition, they appointed Karen Rogers as interim executive director.

In the three weeks that Ms. Rogers has been the professional leader of the agency, she has made a positive impact in providing for shelter tenants, and proposed changes to renew creditability among funding agencies.

I want to thank Ms. Rogers and the board of directors for their commitment to improve the shelter's operation.

It is apparent even it this early stage of management change that the agency is steadfast to its goal to provide a safe place to our area's homeless. The need to serve those who need help at a basic level most, is very obvious.

Currently, there are 33 tenants at the shelter, of which 12 are children.

I encourage the Suffolk and surrounding communities to support Suffolk Shelter for the Homeless as it serves homeless individuals and families every day of the year.

As our community continues to grow, so will the need for increased health and human service programs.

We are fortunate to be part of a generous community.

Let us continue our focus and support on life's most basic needs.
