Chamber of Commerce visit Boy Scouts

Over 80 Boy Scouts from the Old Dominion area are encamped at Camp Waters in Surry where they can look across the James River at Jamestown. Last night, the scouts and the camp director J.D. Blee of Suffolk were hosts to a dozen members of the Suffolk Junior Chamber of Commerce. The visitors ate dinner, participated in their campfire activities, did some exercises, and got back to Suffolk by midnight.

Dawson appointed acting coroner

Dr. C.H. Dawson today was appointed by Judge John Hutton as acting coroner for Nansemond County to fill the vacancy created by Dr. G. Richardson Joyner, who was given a leave of absence to enter military service. Dawson was qualified this morning in the Nansemond clerk’s office and will assume his duties immediately. He has been practicing medicine in Suffolk for several years.

Pure-bred hog sale Thursday

The annual sale of pure-bred registered hogs consigned by members of the Virginia Pure Bred Swine Breeders Association will be held tomorrow at the Perry-Hofler sales stables on North Carolina highway, Parke C. Brinkley, county farm agent, said today. About 60 hogs, open gilts, bred gilts and boars will be offered by the auctioneer, representing Hampshires, Poland-China and Duroc breeds. The sale, which has been held the past three years, will begin at 1 p.m.

Thanos overcomes heat, two-set deficit

Johnny Thanos came through a blistering tennis finals match on the high school courts yesterday afternoon in the heat to beat Jimmy Foster in five sets to win the Suffolk junior tennis. The scores almost tell the tale of determined endurances: 4-6, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 and 7-5. Jimmy appeared to have things his way the first two sets as both settled down to conserve their energy in the heat. In the third, however, the high school ace began to wilt a bit as Johnny built up a 4-love lead. The heat took its toll on the boys as they scampered back and forth. Johnny hung around, but Thanos took the fifth set.

Spivey pitches for two softball wins

Grover Spivey pitched his Planters team to a double victory in softball action last night at Wellons Park, beating Blair Bus 14-8 and Montgomery Ward 4-2. Spivey gave up just three hits to the Wardmen, but Blair outhit Planters 11-10, only to lose the game when the Planters scored seven runs in the last inning.

Personals around town

Mrs. George Bell and Miss Sally Benton returned to Suffolk yesterday after visiting for several days in Maryland. Misses Sally Herbert and Edith Godfrey are spending two weeks at Carolina Beach, NC.
