Nosh on this

You’re going to be seeing signs around town soon that could leave you scratching your head.

&uot;Nosh on the Nansemond&uot; refers basically to a big party that’s going to be thrown to kick off this year’s United Way campaign in Suffolk.

&uot;Nosh&uot; is a Yiddish work meaning &uot;a light meal or snack.&uot; So as you might expect, food will be a big part of &uot;Nosh of the Nansemond.&uot;

The event is scheduled from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9, at Constant’s Wharf Park & Marina and will be the culmination of the annual United Way Day of Caring.

This year, the Day of Caring theme is &uot;Extreme Home Makeovers.&uot; In conjunction with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters, a family from each of the five cities comprising South Hampton Roads has been selected to receive this massive home improvement project conducted solely by our Day of Caring volunteers and with the help of in-kind donations and sponsorships form the following sponsors: The Addison Group, the Suffolk News-Herald, Dominion Power, Surry Nuclear Power plant, Garcia Development, ALLFIRST, Brandon House, Obici Hospital, Ciba Specialty Chemicals, City of Suffolk, 3D’s Construction and the STOP organization.

Our family here in Suffolk consists of a single mother and her 8-year-old son, who have inherited a home that is in need of a lot of TLC. From electrical problems, rotted floors and roof repairs, the plan is to give this family the home it has dreamed of and deserves.

But back to the Nosh: When all the work is completed, it will be time for the party to begin.

We anticipate about 15 local restaurants, including Art’s Kitchen, Baron’s Pub, Pisces, Harbourview Bar & Grill, Panevino Caf\u00E9, Kelly’s and Bennetts Creek Farm Market to have tents on site serving up delicious samples of their fare. The ticket cost of $20 will allow you to sample all the food you can hold along with all the beer you can responsibly drink, if of course, you are over 21 and accompanied by a designated driver.

Music will be provided by the Calypso Nuts who, I understand from Suffolk United Way Campaign Chairman Winn Winslow, play Jimmy Buffet style island music.

Tom Powell and his staff at the Addison Group in Suffolk have donated their time and talent and have been working diligently to prepare posters and tickets and newspaper advertisements that you will be seeing around town soon.

Be watching the News-Herald for more information. I look forward to seeing you there. It should be a blast.
