Regina Belle and Manhattans come to Suffolk Sunday

R&B artist Regina Belle and legendary Manhattans, featuring Gerald Alston and Blue Lovett, will perform at Temple Beth El’s 4th annual Summer Concert at 6:30 p.m. Sunday on the lawn at Temple Beth El, located at 3927 Bridge Road (Route 17 north) in Suffolk.

Urban Arts Center celebrates 11th Camp Galas in Portsmouth

The Urban Arts Center (UAC) of The Center for Community Development Inc. (CCDI) presents the 11th Annual Urban Arts Center Camp Celebration Closing Galas on Aug. 5 at I.C. Norcom High School as the closing event of Camp Celebration 2005, a six-week camp for youth ages 6-17. Camp Celebration offers instruction in Steel Pans, African Drums, Dance, Literacy, Cultural studies and Creative writing for all youth including many who are traditionally underserved in cultural and educational opportunities. Galas will take place at 11:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. joining community leaders, City Council members and citizens of Hampton Roads. Camp Celebrations Galas offer free admission. T-shirts with creative artistry from students and souvenir books will be available for purchase.

East Suffolk Civic League to meet

The East Suffolk Federated Civic League is meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the STOP Training Center, 125 Tynes St. The president is Shirley Christian.

Storytime at the Station

Now through Aug. 11, the Suffolk Seaboard Station, Railroad Museum, is presenting Storytime at the Station. Children ages 3-8 can participate. Join Whiskers and friends every Thursday. Ages 3,4 and 5 (15 children maximum) can hear stories from 10:15 a.m. until 10:45 a.m.; for ages 6-8, 11-11:30 a.m. (15 maximum in a group). Reservations are required. The cost is $2 per visit. Order of the Eastern Star to meet

At 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3, the Order of the Eastern Star will meet at the Masonic Lodge, located at 168 Tyne St., Suffolk. The meeting will be held downstairs. Business of importance will be discussed.

Queens wanted

The East Suffolk Community Center is sponsoring a Little Miss ACTION pageant for girls between the ages of 5 and 12.

All participants will receive a gift. The pageant winner will receive a trophy, crown, sash and savings bond.

Health screenings

The Obici Wellness Center, 2769 Godwin Boulevard, is offering the following screenings, next month:

*Glucose/cholesterol/blood pressure, 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Aug. 2. The test cost $20 and includes total cholesterol, HDL (good cholesterol), total/HDL ratio, blood glucose and blood pressure.

*Free Blood Pressure Screening, from 9 am to noon Thursday, Aug. 4, free.

*Bone density screening for women, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9. The cost is $20.

KFHS Band Boosters selling fried chicken lunch and dinners

King’s Fork High School Band Boosters are sponsoring a Fried Chicken lunch and dinner on Friday, Aug. 19.

Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and dinner will be served from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the high school.

Tickets are $7 per plate.

Lunch-time delivery is available for orders of 10 or more in the downtown Suffolk area.

The menu includes fried chicken, green beans, new potatoes and hush puppies.

Suffolk Health Department offers free screenings

From 8 a.m. to noon Monday, the Suffolk Health Department, located at 1217 N. Main St., will offer free blood pressure and diabetes screenings. A cholesterol screening is $10. Services are provided on a walk-in basis in the main lobby. A Health Fair will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Temple Beth-El on Route 17. From 2 to 3 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 16, free blood pressure screenings will be offered at the Chorey Park Apartments at 804 W. Constance Road. From 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, screenings will be provided at the Suffolk Towers Apartments at 181 N. Main St. Call 686-4914 for more information.

The Suffolk Public Library System is sponsoring the 2005 Summer Reading Program for children of all ages.
