All three Suffolk golf teams were in action Wednesday afternoon in Chesapeake at Cahoon Plantation.

Playing the British &uot;Union Jack&uot; nine and the Scottish &uot;Saltire&uot; nine, King’s Fork paired off versus Nansemond River and Lakeland took on Great Bridge.

With just one group still left on the course in the River/Fork match, Bulldog head coach Tim Goetz said, &uot;It’s going to be close, we had a little bit of controversy, but I don’t know that it’ll matter. I don’t know how all my guys have done on the back.&uot;

Goetz’s premonition was remarkably accurate as when the cards where finally tallied River came away with a tight, four-shot victory over the Bulldogs, 332-336.

And about the controversy, a Bulldog golfer was docked two strokes for grounding his club in a hazard. Golfers from opposing schools did not see eye to eye about what had occurred but the penalty was assessed, but the four shot margin made it academic, barely.

&uot;One guy said one thing, and one guy was saying a different thing,&uot; said Goetz .

Rashad Hunt was medalist for the second time in two matches to start the Warrior season, carding an even-par 71. River’s Nolan Butler shot a 78.

Four Bulldog golfers shot in the eighties: David Brown 80, Shane Doherty 82, T.J. Woodard 86, and Mike Steingold 88.

In the second match, Lakeland’s Ben Hunter earned medalist honors with a one-under 70, but the Cavaliers still fell short to a strong, well-balanced effort by Great Bridge, 302-322.

&uot;My 100-yard shots and in, that’s what got me the birdies today,&uot; said Hunter, who tallied four birdies and three bogies for his 70.

Lakeland (1-1) continued their busy first week of the golf season on Thursday with a match-up against Franklin at Suffolk Golf Course. Results were not available at press time.

The Warriors (2-0) look to keep winning on Monday versus Indian River, and King’s Fork (0-1) tees it up again on Tuesday against Great Bridge (their match earlier in the week against Western Branch was rained out, and a makeup date had not been announced at press time).

Both matches, along with Lakeland versus Western Branch on Monday afternoon, will be held at Nansemond River Golf Club.
