Macedonia AME’s

Macedonia African Methodist Episcopal Church, 127 Pine St, is celebrating its 135th anniversary with a homecoming service and revival through Aug. 26.

Homecoming service will be at 11 a.m. today with the Rev. Anthony N. Jones, a Suffolk native and pastor of Tyree African Methodist Church in Philadelphia, as guest speaker. The 135th anniversary service will be held at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Andrea Pierre Jefferson and his congregation from Bethel AME Church. The Rev. Steven A. Blunt, pastor of First Baptist Church, Mahan Street will conduct nightly revival services from 7 a.m. Aug. 22-25.

The mass choir of Canaan Baptist Church, 2064 Nansemond Parkway, is holding a mini-concert for the benefit of Brandon Shawn Barnes, who needs a kidney transplant, at 6 p.m. Aug. 27.

Oxford clothes closet available

As part of Oxford United Methodist’s church’s mission work in the city of Suffolk, the congregation is operating a clothes closet. The program has been running since June 30. Operation hours are from 9 a.m. to noon every Thursday. Hours will expand as the need grows and the closet becomes mores established.

Oxford is partnering with other local churches to meet the growing need in Suffolk. Residents are asked to assist in the following areas: prayer, volunteering, and donations (pick-up is available). To assist, call 434-1405.
