Jeremy Branch loves being a disc jockey.

He likes to bring in the crowds. He likes to help people have fun.

And yes, he likes hanging out with the beautiful women who come to hear him play.

"I bought the stuff from a friend, and then went out on my own," Branch says at Baron's Pub, after briefly pausing to wave at two such ladies. "I've done private parties, weddings, everything."

After getting his start at the Downtowner, in the Main Street building that now houses the seafood restaurant Pisces, Branch has been doing bi-weekly shows at the Pub since January.

"The owner came to me and asked me if I could bring in a crowd," says Branch, who plays every other Wednesday night (his next show will be Sept. 7). "I told him I could, just from everybody I know around town."

He was right; on Wednesday, the club resembled a busy Saturday evening.

"He's the best DJ in Suffolk!" said Ashley Holland, taking a break from dancing with her pals. "He's the only DJ that can bring in a good crowd and get Suffolk going. We always have a lot of fun. He makes sure you never leave without a good time."

Though Rhonda Smith came to celebrate a birthday party, she certainly left with such a time.

"I've been here before, but never when he's here," Smith says as the sounds of "Can't Touch This" and "Wild Thing" blast from Branch's speakers. "If you want to dance and have a good time, you used to have to go outside Suffolk. This was, you don't have to drive 20 miles to listen to music."

Sitting at the end of the bar, co-owner Mike Williams remembers Branch's start in the business.

"It was persistence," Williams says. "The staff told me I should bring him in, and he does a fine job. He keeps the crowd going. He's good for all ages."

Branch puts in a CD compiled with a mix of "Greased Lightning," "Summer Loving," and other songs from Grease.

"I don't keep the same kind of songs going," he says. "If the crowd's not enjoying it, then I change it up. I like seeing them dance and sing the songs and stuff, and watching everybody have a good time."
