During the back nine of Wednesday’s cross-town golf match between King’s Fork and Lakeland at Sleepy Hole Golf Course, Cavalier head coach Ron Robertson was as complimentary of the Bulldogs as about his own golfers.

&uot;They (King’s Fork) are doing everything they should be doing,&uot; he said. &uot;They’re playing smart and they aren’t making many mistakes, and when there is a mistake, it’s only a minor one.&uot;

On a breezy, almost autumn-like afternoon at Sleepy Hole, the favored Cavaliers looked, and if you listened to their coach, sounded, as though they might wind up being outplayed by the Bulldogs.

The top Bulldog pair, David Brown and Shane Doherty, both drained birdie putts, each in excess of 20 feet, on the par-four 15th. This, combined with bogies from Lakeland’s Ben Hunter and Nick Howell, created a four-shot swing on one hole coming down the stretch.

The depth of the Cavalier team was the difference though as the final scores added up to a 330-335 Lakeland victory.

Playing in the second group, Augie Camacho’s 78 and Josh Winslow’s 89 made up the deficit Lakeland faced from the first group.

Doherty finished as match medalist, firing a three-over par 75, and his partner Brown carded a 76; while Hunter and Howell shot 77 and 86 respectively. Casey Moffitt’s 91 and T. J. Woodard’s 93 were the other two Fork scores.

The competition for King’s Fork (7-3, 3-3) only gets more difficult, as the Bulldogs will take on Hickory at Suffolk Golf Course Monday afternoon.

Lakeland (8-2, 5-2) will wrap up their regular season schedule Monday, also at Suffolk, against Nansemond River.
