Lakeland was the lone Suffolk school to be victorious on the second day of the Suffolk Varsity Invitational at Nansemond River on Friday.

With one goal in each half the Lady Cavaliers remained undefeated for the season, and within their tournament group, with a 2-0 decision over Poquoson.

Poquoson started the match on the attack, controlling play for most of the opening 10 minutes, but creating few direct scoring chances. The Lady Cavaliers woke up from their slow start and began playing more and more in the Poquoson half as the first period moved along.

A few minutes before the break, off a penalty corner, Lakeland was able to string four passes together in the Poquoson circle, with Ashby Stancill finding Lindsay Cutchins directly in front of goal, and Cutchins slapping a shot past the keeper from there to put Lakeland ahead 1-0.

Despite the tough going early on, Lakeland had a 10-1 shot advantage in the first half and a 7-0 margin on penalty corners.

Poquoson remained within a goal for most of the second half, and had a few good chances to draw even. About midway through the half, the second of consecutive Poquoson penalty corners was defused only with a 40-yard long kick to the center stripe from Lady Cavalier keeper Kelsey Cutchins.

Lakeland was able to finish the match off about four minutes from the end off another penalty corner. Chelsey Salmon took the corner, passing to Nicole Klee at the top of the circle. Klee fought her way through traffic, and got a shot off into the back of the cage, putting her side up 2-0.

&uot;I think we’re improving from our first game, but there’s still a lot of things we need to work on,’ said Klee, &uot;We played in the circle a lot, but we just couldn’t put it in. We need to be shooting better into the corners.&uot;

&uot;We struggled in a couple games earlier in the week,&uot; said Lakeland coach Tara Worley, &uot;so we’ve made some adjustments and we’re still working on those things.&uot;

In other Invitational matches Friday, Nansemond River dropped their second one-goal decision in as many afternoons, this time falling 1-0 to Bayside.

Bayside scored the game’s only goal about eight minutes after halftime.

Amber Shaffer stopped 11 of Bayside’s 12 shots on goal. King’s Fork lost their second match of the tournament, 6-0 to Kecoughtan.

Lakeland played Landstown (at Nanse-mond River) Saturday , and the Lady Bulldogs and Lady Warriors squared off. All three schools played once more

later in the day, with none of the games finished at press time.
