Byrum Hunt Club Turkey Shoot

The Byrum Hunt Club will be hosting a turkey shoot every Friday and Saturday night from 7:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. from Sept. 9 through Oct. 29.

The hunt club is located on Copeland Road in Suffolk, between routes 32 and 13.

Post P. Travelers Protective Association

The monthly meeting of Post P. Travelers Protective Association will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 14 at the Magnolia Ruritan Clubhouse at 1047 Nansemond Parkway.

Fellowship begins at 6 p.m. with the dinner meeting to follow at 7:00.

All members are urged to attend and bring a prospective member.

Lake Kilby Garden Club

The Lake Kilby Garden Club will meet at 2 p.m., Sept. 14, at the home of Margaret Smith, 117 Military Road.

Margaret Smith and Fan Panton are hostesses.

The program, &uot;Holly Days,&uot; will be presented by Holly Hoffler.

The exhibit of the day will be an arrangement using mixed garden flowers.

Exhibitors are to be Connie Taylor and Carol Woolard.

Judges are to be Ruth Saunders and June Barrett.

Lake Kennedy Civic League

The Lake Kennedy Civic League will be meeting on Thursday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. at Tabernacle Christian Church on 1401 East Washington Street.

A Silent Auction, sponsored by the Paul D. Camp Community College Alumni Society, will be held September 15 from 6-8 p.m. at the Workforce Development Center in Franklin. Bethlehem Christian Church Women’s Ministry is sponsoring Women’s Conference 2005 at the Virginia Beach Resort and Conference Center on Sept. 16 and 17.

Featured speakers include Suffolk’s Pastor Kecia Reed from God’s House of Refuge, Elder Jami Russell from St. Paul Baptist Church, and Minister Cynthia Daniels from Bethlehem Christian Church.

Spiritual Empowerment for Every Woman is the conference’s theme.

Fraternal Order of Police Fish Fry

The Fraternal Order of Police, Suffolk Lodge #41, is having a fish fry Saturday, Sept. 17 from 11:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Suffolk National Guard Armory on Godwin Boulevard.

The cost is $6 per meal, for either eat in or take out.

Pancake Breakfast

The Eastover Wilroy Ruritan Club is holding a Pancake Breakfast fundraiser on Saturday, Sept. 17 from 6:30 a.m. until noon at the Eastover Wilroy Ruritan Club House, located behind Wilroy Baptist Church.

Tickets are $5.00 or you can pay at the door.

The breakfast is pancakes, linked sausage, apples and tea or coffee.

We will also have a sweet table with homemade fried pies, cookies, and brownies available for purchase.

Suffolk Department of Health events

The Suffolk Department of Health will be holding free blood pressure screenings later this month at three locations.

On Tuesday, Sept. 20 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. in the main lobby of Chorey Park Apartments at 804 West Constance Road; on Wednesday, Sept. 21 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. in the lobby of Suffolk Towers at 181 North Main Street.

Also on Sept. 21, there will be free blood pressure and diabetes screening at the Suffolk Senior Center at 350 North Main Street from 10 a.m. until noon.

55 Alive

The Suffolk Chapter of the AARP will sponsor the 55 Alive driving class on September 21 and 22 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The class will be held at the Suffolk Presbyterian Church, at the corner of Broad and Constance.

The cost is $10.

Class size will be limited.

Girl Scout Fest 2005

Come join the fun at Girl Scout Fest 2005 on Saturday, Sept. 24, from noon to 4:00 p.m., at the ODU Constant Convocation Center.

Over 50 museum and community exhibits and hands-on activities will be there for the entire family.

Launch rockets with NASA, see Mad Science theater perform on stage, jump in a moonwalk and more.

Admission is $3 at the door; free for kids four and under.

No charge for parking.

Chuckatuck VFD Fish Fry

The Chuckatuck Volunteer Fire Department is having a fish fry on Saturday, Sept. 24 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Tickets are $8 in advance and $9 on the day of the event.

Filet of fish, potatoes, cole slaw, hush puppies and iced tea will be the fare.

Help Wanted

The Suffolk Literacy Council needs volunteers to tutor adults in basic reading skills.

The next workshop is Sept. 26 and 27, and Oct. 3 and 4 from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. each evening.

The workshops are held at Suffolk Christian Church at 216 North Main Street.

There is a $10 fee for books and materials.

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Ivor Rescue Squad will hold a yard sale on Saturday, Oct. 8 from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Ivor Rescue Squad building.

Senior aerobics offered

Senior aerobics is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Suffolk Senior Center, 350 N. Main St. Betty Cartwright instructs this class, which is free to seniors 55 and over. For more information call the Senior Center at 923-2372.

Holland UCC welcomes seniors
