Bowser collects over $1,100 for Katrina victims

In response to Hurricane Katrina, Florence Bowser Elementary School is doing everything possible to make a difference both close to home and on the Gulf Coast.

The school’s staff has collected $1,105, some of which has gone to help a new student at Florence Bowser, who has been displaced from Biloxi, Mississippi.

New back-to-school clothes, a backpack and school supplies have been donated.

The rest of the raised money was given to the Suffolk chapter of the American Red Cross.

LHS teacher

gets history award

India Meissel, a social studies teacher at Lakeland High School, has been selected as the first recipient of the Mary V. Bicouvaris Award for Excellence in the Teaching of History.

The award is named for the first Virginia teacher to earn National Teacher of the Year recognition in 1989.

Meissel will receive $1,000 for the honor.

In a separate recognition, Meissel is one of three teachers who will be receiving the state’s Teacher of the Year award from the Virginia Council for the Social Studies.

For this award, she will receive $500.

Both awards will be given at the 41st Annual Conference of Virginia Social Studies Educators in Roanoke this November.

Constitution Day at Southwestern

Southwestern Elementary School will celebrate Constitution Day on Friday, Sept. 16 at 9:30 a.m.

Students will dress in costume and explain the history and meaning of our great Constitution.

Students will sing patriotic songs and even have the chance to sign the Constitution, which will then be displayed throughout the school. Students will be honoring our country and its Constitution by wearing red, white and blue on the day of the assembly.

ACT Registration Date

Attention high school seniors interested in taking the ACT in October.

The registration deadline for the October test is Friday, Sept. 16.

All students registering after Sept. 16 for the Oct. 22 test must pay an $18 late fee.

Grandparent’s Week

Grandparent’s Week will be observed in Suffolk Public Schools from Monday, Sept 19 through Friday, Sept. 23.

Each student may invite one grandparent to have lunch with him/her in the cafeteria.

One lunch per student will be paid by the School Board Office, but other grandparents may attend &uot;dutch treat.&uot;

A child who does not have a grandparent in Suffolk may invite an aunt, uncle, or other adult family member.

SEAC Meeting

The Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) will be meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 6:30 p.m. at King’s Fork Middle School.

&uot;We Care, We Share&uot;

at Northern Shores

Northern Shores Elemen-tary School will be having a &uot;We Care, We Share&uot; fundraiser day at the school on Thursday, Sept. 22 from 9 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.

Students, parents, faculty, staff and the Southeastern Virginia Chapter of the American Red Cross will be at the school to partake in community involvement and character education.

Rezoning Citizen

Input Meeting

There is a Citizen Input Meeting set for Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 7:00 p.m. at the Nansemond River High School Auditorium concerning rezoning for Creekside Elementary School, which is opening in Sept. 2006.

At this point, interested parents and citizens can share ideas with rezoning committee members.

The committee will recommend a plan to the School Board in several months, public hearing will then be held, and the board will vote on the final Creekside zones by April 2006.
