Janie Dare Blanchard, 90, Ret. Brig. of the Salvation Army, died Sept. 13, 2005, in Smithfield.

Born May 26, 1915 in Hertford County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Willie and Allie Briggs Blanchard.

Commissioned as an officer in 1938, Brig. Blanchard served the Salvation Army in several appointments in the Southern Territory. Her last appointment was Atlanta, Geo.

Survivors include her neph-ews and nieces-in-law, Jack and Barbara King of Smith-field, Halford and Carolyn King of Shipman, Ronnie and Emily King of Suffolk, the Rev. James A. and Joy Blanchard Jr., of Oxford, N.C., the Rev. William Bradford Blanchard Jr. and Deborah of Kimball, W.V. and several great nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends in the from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday in the R. W. Baker and Co. Funeral Home and Crematory followed by a graveside service at noon in the Blanchard Family Cemetery in Gates County, N.C., conducted by Col J. B. Matthews.
