The Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Health Commissioner has issued a Certificate of Public Need to Obici Hospital for the development and construction of an Ambulatory Surgery Center.

In reviewing Obici's application, Health Commissioner Dr. Robert Stroube, noted the project addressed a demonstrated public need and the need for expanded capacity of Obici's existing operating rooms.

"We are excited the Commissioner has granted us this approval," said Rosemary Check, Obici Health System's Chief Executive Officer. "We are also appreciative of the confidence and support extended by the citizens of Suffolk, Isle of Wight, Smithfield, and surrounding communities throughout the approval process. This approval opens the way for full implementation of plans to increase services to those we serve."

When complete, the new surgery center will be comprised of two operating rooms and two procedure rooms for a total project cost of $6.9 million. The center is expected to become operational in 2007.
