The Junto Woman’s Club, a member of GFWC Virginia, will hold a luncheon meeting at noon on Monday, Sept. 19 at St. John’s Parish Hall.

The cost is $8.

AARP Meeting

The Suffolk Chapter of the AARP is meeting at their new location, 815 King’s Fork Road, on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 10:30 a.m.

The featured speaker will be State Delegate Chris Jones.

The subjects include, senior issues from the legislative perspective and comments about FEMA.

Members are asked to bring finger food for lunch, and don’t forget Autumn Care items.

Suffolk Department of Health events

The Suffolk Department of Health will be holding free blood pressure screenings later this month at three locations.

On Tuesday, Sept. 20 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. in the main lobby of Chorey Park Apartments at 804 West Constance Road; on Wednesday, Sept. 21 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. in the lobby of Suffolk Towers at 181 North Main Street.

Also on Sept. 21, there will be free blood pressure and diabetes screening at the Suffolk Senior Center at 350 North Main Street from 10 a.m. until noon.

The Suffolk Christian Women’s Connection is sponsoring a Wedding Fashion Brunch at the Hilton Garden Inn on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 9:00 a.m.

Girl Scout Fest 2005

Launch rockets with NASA, see Mad Science theater perform on stage, jump in a moonwalk and more.

Chuckatuck VFD Fish Fry

The Chuckatuck Volunteer Fire Department is having a fish fry on Saturday, Sept. 24 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Tickets are $8 in advance and $9 on the day of the event.

Filet of fish, potatoes, cole slaw, hush puppies and iced tea will be the fare.

Help Wanted

The Suffolk Literacy Council needs volunteers to tutor adults in basic reading skills.

The next workshop is Sept. 26 and 27, and Oct. 3 and 4 from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. each evening.

The workshops are held at Suffolk Christian Church at 216 North Main Street.

There is a $10 fee for books and materials.

Whaleyville V. F. D. fish fry

The Whaleyville Volunteer Fire Department is hosting a fish fry Saturday, Oct. 1 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Cost is $6 per plate; eat in or take out.

Trout fillet, cole slaw, boiled potatoes and hush puppies will be served, along with a bake sale from the Women of Whaleyville United Methodist Church.

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Ivor Rescue Squad will hold a yard sale on Saturday, Oct. 8 from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Ivor Rescue Squad building.
