Lightning hits Wilroy

A container plant in Wilroy Industrial Park suffered minor damage in an electrical fire early Sunday.

Firefighters arriving at Crown Cork and Seal, in the 1300 block of Progress Road, around 1:45 a.m. found the electrical room charged with thick black smoke and a fire burning in the panel box, said Capt. Jim Judkins, spokesman for the Fire Department.

Firefighters kept the blaze in check with fire extinguishers until Dominion Virginia Power arrived around 2 a.m. and secured electrical service to the building, he said.

Flames were contained to the panel box with several spot fires on the electrical room floor, he said.

The fire, which was cause dby a lightning strike, was discovered by an employee who smelled smoke, he said.

Damage was estimated at $6,000.
